Shielding Your Skin

Summer is here! While we love the warmer weather and long summer nights, protecting our skin at all ages is an important part of fun in the sun. As temperatures rise, your skin is faced with a unique set of challenges. Not only do we want to protect our skin from skin cancer, it is also important to protect ourselves from sunburns and premature aging.

Here’s a guide to safeguarding your skin from the scorching sun and heat.

1. Sunscreen

The most critical step in protecting your skin is the diligent application of sunscreen. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Broad-spectrum means it protects against both UVA and UVB rays, which are responsible for sunburn and skin aging, respectively. Apply it generously to all exposed skin, and reapply every two hours, or more frequently if you're swimming or sweating.

2. Stay Hydrated

Heat can lead to dehydration. Drinking plenty of water throughout the day helps maintain your skin’s moisture balance from the inside out.

3. Seek Shade and Wear Protective Clothing

Whenever possible, take breaks in the shade, especially during peak sun hours between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Additionally, consider wearing lightweight, long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and a wide-brimmed hat to shield your skin from direct sunlight. Many outdoor clothing brands offer UV-protective garments designed specifically for sun exposure.

4. Avoid Peak Sun Hours

Timing is everything. Try to schedule outdoor activities for early morning or late afternoon when the sun is less intense. If you must be outside during peak hours, make sure to follow all the other protective measures listed here.

5. Exfoliate with Caution

Exfoliation helps remove dead skin cells and promotes a healthy glow, but excessive exfoliation can lead to irritation, especially in the heat. Limit exfoliation to once or twice a week. This ensures you’re not aggravating your skin, which can be more sensitive during hot weather.

6. Monitor Your Skin’s Health

Regularly check your skin for any unusual changes, such as new moles or changes in existing ones. Heat and sun exposure can exacerbate skin issues. If you notice anything concerning, consult a dermatologist. Check out our blog post on how to prepare for a skin check too!

Keeping your skin healthy during hot weather involves a combination of smart sun protection, hydration, and proper skincare. By incorporating these tips into your routine, you can enjoy the sunny days with peace of mind, knowing your skin is well-protected and cared for. Go ahead, soak up the summer fun...

just remember to keep your skin safe!
